He was walking toward the timber down wind of me. I estimated the shot to be about 90 yards. I did not have a scope on my gun but I knew what it would do at 80 yards. I shot and he spun around and went into the field out in front of me at about 100 yards and stopped, trying to figure out where the shot came from. I shot again and he didn't seem to concerned and kept going across the field. I had to wait for the next shot because he was between me and a house. Once he got past the house he continued across the field and stopped at what I guessed was 120 yards. I shot 3 times and the last shot about knocked him over. He caught his balance and kept on going into the neighbors 50 plus acres. I waited a half hour then went in pursuit of him. I checked the area of the last 3 shots to look for blood. There was no snow and the weeds were heavy and I did not finding a blood trail. The neighbor come down from his stand. I asked if he had seen the deer, he said no. He then gave me permission to continue looking for him. I finally found a good blood trail in the snow where he went through a hedge row. I had to get down on my knees due to the thick brush to follow the trail. I found him about 50 yards in the brush still trying to get up. I put another slug in him ending the pursuit. I stepped off the last 3 shots a week later and it was exactly 150 yards to my stand. So I am convinced the Mossberg will reach out and touch em.
Although he fell short of making the Boone and Crockett record book by 5'' he still is a trophy.
